Natural Stone Installation Methods
Thinset, mud bed, dry lay, and cladding systems explained
Overview
Overview of the four primary natural stone installation methods used in North American residential and commercial projects.
How-to steps
Step-by-step
- 1. Thinset over substrate
Most common for tile-format stone indoors. Requires flat substrate and ANSI A118.4 polymer-modified mortar.
- 2. Mortar bed (mud set)
Traditional 1–2 inch mortar bed allows slope adjustment — common for large-format floor tile and shower pans.
- 3. Mechanical cladding
Exterior facades use clip systems or mortar anchors per ASTM C1242 — never rely on adhesive alone for heavy panels.
